Listen to the meeting on your phone
If it is hard to hear from where you are sitting, the sound from the chapel can come straight to your own phone and headphones. It is free, there is nothing to borrow from the library, and nobody can tell you are using it.
First, join the Liahona wi-fi.
That is the network name in the building. This only works inside the
meetinghouse, on that wi-fi. It does not use your mobile data, and it will
not work at home or in the car park. If your phone is on cellular instead
of wi-fi, the app will find nothing to play.
Get the app
It is called ListenWIFI, made by Listen Technologies. Free, on both kinds of phone. Install it once; after that it takes about five seconds to use.
Worth installing at home, where the download is quick, rather than in the foyer two minutes before the meeting.
Using it
-
Connect to the
Liahonawi-fiBefore you open the app. If the app opens to an empty list, this is almost always why.
-
Open ListenWIFI and pick the room you are in
It lists the rooms it can hear. Tap the one you are sitting in — for sacrament meeting and for stake conference that is 1 Chapel.
The rooms are numbered. What you see depends on the building.
-
It starts playing — then set your language
The room you chose jumps to the top and begins. Along the bottom are a volume button, the language, and the pause control. Tap the language to swap between English and español.
Two upright bars mean it is playing. Tap them to pause.
-
Put your headphones in
Wired earbuds, Bluetooth headphones, or a neck loop if you use a hearing aid with a T-coil. Plug in or pair before you press play and the sound goes where you expect it to.
Which room is which
The list depends on the building. A typical one reads:
| Channel | What it is picking up |
|---|---|
| 1 Chapel | The chapel sound system — sacrament meeting, stake conference |
| 2 Front CC | The cultural hall, front end |
| 3 Rear CC | The cultural hall, back end |
| 4 Relief Soc. | The Relief Society room |
Rooms other than the chapel only carry sound when somebody is speaking into a microphone plugged in there. If a class is not using a microphone that channel will be silent, which is the system working as designed rather than a fault. Not every building has those extra inputs.
If it does not work
- The list is empty. You are not on the
Liahonawi-fi. Check your phone's wi-fi settings, then close the app completely and open it again. - You joined the wi-fi and it still finds nothing. Some phones quietly fall back to mobile data when a wi-fi network has no internet. Turn mobile data off for a moment and reopen the app.
- It says it is playing but you hear nothing. Check the volume inside the app as well as the phone's own volume, and check your headphones are connected to this phone and not to something else in your bag.
- The sound is a second or two behind the speaker. That is normal and cannot be removed. If you can also see the pulpit it feels odd at first; most people stop noticing.
- It drops out near the back of the building. Move nearer the chapel, where the wi-fi is strongest.
A few things worth knowing
- It uses the building's wi-fi, not your data allowance.
- Nothing is recorded, and nothing is saved on your phone.
- You do not sign in, and the app is never told who you are.
- Put your phone on silent first, as you would anyway.
- It is as useful to a parent in the foyer with a small child as it is to somebody hard of hearing.
